about

One Child Policy's debut release, Cultural Transmissions, features productions that are as kinetic and club-oriented as they are cerebral and mind-bending. In the opening track, “Yin” a boomy fractured rhythm lays the foundation for ominous textures swirling alongside a prowling arpeggio, transporting the listener into a sonic abyss. This energy is let loose in the Drexciya-esque “Red Coast Base Surveillance,” which sets detuned lo-fi pads bleeding over a menacing bass line.. In the track “Only Me” the call and response of the voices are used to explore the dichotomy as a Chinese American upholding filial piety (孝) towards his family. Driven by a lo-fi 4/4 pulse, an icy female vocal pierces through moody pads and heady TB-303 atmospheres. With a nod to UK garage, “Chasing the Dragon” brings disco samples to a techno landscape, for a highly danceable track with a big beat. The closing track, Cultural Transmissions, contrasts piercing sonic bursts (the sound of tuned and processed Chinese fireworks) over layers of silken vocals and heavenly pads that explores the producer’s bittersweet sentiment towards his two-sided upbringing.
